One of the most common questions I hear from students is: “What should I study? What degree or certificate should I go after?” The truth is, the answer depends on your goals, but let me tell you a little secret—it’s not as critical as you might think.

Your Major Isn’t the End-All, Be-All

Both college and trade students get stuck because they’re unsure WHAT they want to do, and they think their major will define their entire future. Or, they are afraid to make a mistake. I’m here to tell you that’s not true. After working in corporate, nonprofit, and technology sectors, I’ve seen firsthand that most employers don’t care about your exact major unless you are in a specialty area.

It’s Never Too Late to Pivot

Your degree doesn’t lock you into one career path. I’ve seen many people switch careers later in life, and they’ve thrived. Take the example of a woman who studied opera but became a regional president of a major bank. Or my friend who holds an executive role in a tech company after earning a master’s in social work.

For Foster Youth in Texas: A Unique Opportunity

If you’re a foster youth in Texas, pay attention—this part is for you! Texas offers an unlimited tuition waiver if you start college before age 25. Your tuition for undergrad, graduate school, and even medical or law school can be completely covered. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

My Checklist for Success After High School

  1. Decide on Your Path – College, trade school, or certification. Just pick something.

  2. Get Started – Don’t worry about being perfect; just get moving.

  3. Take Advantage of Resources – Visit the your local Transition Center, Use the tuition waiver and ETV program.

  4. Stay Open to Change – Your first choice doesn’t have to be your last.

Remember, your path doesn’t have to be linear. Start where you are, use the resources available, and finish what you start. Doors will open for you, even if you can’t see them yet.

Next Steps: Now that you’ve learned how important it is to choose a degree that fits your goals (and the resources that can help foster youth along the way), it’s time to take action. Are you ready to explore your options?
